Historic Preservation

Calico Rock's Main Street has been designated a Historic District. A row of buildings on each side of the street, originally constructed between 1900 and 1930, have recently undergone extensive restoration under the guidance of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program.

Representing early construction in one of the oldest towns west of the Mississippi River, these buildings have been included in the National Register of Historic Places. In 1990, an old landmark, The River View Hotel, located one block off Historic Main Street, was added to this Register.

The Izard County Historic Society has been organized and active since 1969. It publishes a quarterly historical review and provides assistance to people interested in genealogical research.

As an Arkansas Sesquicentennial event, over 200 area residents participated in a historical revue that portrayed the history of the area in tableau and narrative before an audience of over 1,000, including Governor Bill Clinton, Congressman Bill Alexander and State Representative John Miller.
